Goals by Sempai Eva

More than a quarter of 2016 has now passed and with the NSW State Championships fast approaching it is time to pause and evaluate our progress thus far for the year.

It is essential to set goals in order to give our training meaning and direction. You will find that your drive and energy will be increased by the simple action of having a goal to work towards.

A lot of us set our goals at the beginning of the year. Sometimes we write them down, sometimes we talk about them with our training partners and families.  To ensure progress, and to keep our goals relevant, we should occasionally review our goals and, if needed, revise them.

When setting goals we should ensure they are specific, that there is a way to measure or check progress along the way and that there is a target date or time for the achievement of the goal.  Goals should also have personal meaning and relevance for you.

It is useful also to set interim goals which would lead up to the achievement of the main goal.  A big task is accomplished by completing a series of smaller tasks along the way. Ask yourself - what do I need to do this month, this week and each day to progress towards the attainment of my goal?  A monthly goal might be to learn your kata or combinations or terminology required for your next grade.  A weekly goal might be to participate in a least 2 training classes that week. A daily goal might be to come to training, do your best and get your instructor to answer any questions you have. Completing each of these actions will bring you closer to accomplishing your goal.

The goal-setting principles apply not only to your Karate practice but also to other accomplishments you set out to achieve in other areas of life.

If you have any questions on goal setting, please do not hesitate to speak to one of our instructors. We are here to help!
